Mohegan Sun Casino
Chelsea, Massachusetts is in the midst of a historic agreement for the city; The City Council unanimously endorsed a resolution, which authorizes City Manager Jay Ash to enter into a $2.5 million a year deal for Surrounding Community Agreement with Mohegan Sun. Manager Jay Ash and City Council President Matt Frank discussed the agreement, and to address issues related to public safety and other concerns.
Matt Frank stated that, “this is a great package for Chelsea, 2.5 times richer than any other surrounding community agreement anyone has signed in Massachusetts. It addresses our concerns and allows us to focus on the benefits of having 4,000 jobs and more than a billion dollars of investment at our doorstep”. Bringing more availability of jobs into the community will only help it to continue to grow and to attract more people. This could possibly also influence the retail market because with the casino comes a resort, with places to stay as well as shops for tourists to enjoy while there.
As part of the agreement, City Manager Jay Ash stated that at least 200 jobs provided by the incoming casino will go to Chelsea residents, and $2.5 million will be spent yearly on local businesses. These local businesses will also be able to accept Mohegan Sun rewards cards. Improvements will be made on Revere Beach parkway including installation of more summer jobs and regional planning.
Chelsea isn’t the only city to make this agreement. A similar agreement has been made with Wynn Resorts, which is proposing a $1.2 billion resort casino located on Route 99 in Everett, MA. The casino company has not only designated Chelsea and Everett as Surrounding Communities, but Boston, Saugus, Cambridge, Malden, Medford Melrose, Salem, Lynn, and Winthrop as well. In total, the local impacts payments will reach $3.75 million amount the seven municipalities, with Chelsea receiving $2.5 million of that.
